Hutsby&Sullivan hold their ground

“It’s strange that we’re only half way. Most of us played two or three practice rounds, so it already feels like a long week but there are three rounds to go. I feel fresh though, and I’ve been sleeping well. I’ve been playing nicely, so I’m looking forward to the next three days.”

Sullivan, who played with Tom Lewis in Great Britain and Ireland’s triumphant 2011 Walker Cup team, posted six birdies as against three bogeys to move to 14 under par and within sight of a first European Tour card just three months after joining the professional ranks.

“I’ve been a professional for three months, and I love it. I’ve probably learned more in three months than I did in my whole amateur career, so it’s been fantastic. This has definitely been my most enjoyable week as a pro, scoring wise. I’ve been playing well prior to this but just haven’t seemed to put the numbers together, so it’s nice to be able to do that finally.”

Rory McIlroy pulls out Thailand due to sever fatigue

Rory McIlroy may be just 22 years old, but after playing six events in the last 11 weeks, you could tell he was running on fumes when he showed up at the season-ending European Tour event in Dubai.

Even before the week began, McIlroy was already complaining of severe fatigue from what doctors believe was a case of dengue fever, most likely contracted when the Ulsterman was in the Far East over the last three weeks.

On the verge of playing his fourth event in four weeks, McIlroy decided to pass on the chance to head to Thailand, a fifth straight tournament, and hang up the clubs for the next month. While the tournament will most likely miss him, the decision to take a break is a smart one.

“Can’t wait to not have to get up and practice or hit a shot or people telling me what to do or where to go, or just have a few weeks off would be nice,” McIlroy said.

“[The doctor] said don’t bother getting on a flight for a few days, just completely stay in the one place for a while and just chill out.”

You have to give McIlroy credit for trying to grind at the end of the season when most of the top players in the States are spending time at home. But with the European Tour pushing the final event of the season until the second week in December, it no doubt forced him to extend the season in an attempt to catch Luke Donald in the Race to Dubai.

Even though he couldn’t catch Donald, he certainly pushed him to the limits … and that’s all you can ask from one of golf’s rising stars. With McIlroy taking up dual membership on the PGA and European Tours next year, it’ll be interesting to see how much jet-setting he does in 2012.

Two new events for Australian PGA

The announcement was made by the Australian PGA Tour’s chief executive on Thursday, as reported by Reuters, just days after the two new events were officially unveiled.

The Perth International Golf Championship and the NZ Pro-am Championship will add at least AU$2.3 million in 2012, the tour revealed – equal to a 41 percent increase.

“With these two new tournaments and with the continued growth of OneAsia, we are constantly working towards a vibrant domestic and regional tournament platform for our growing elite ranks,” Brian Thorburn, CEO of the Australian PGA, said according to Reuters.

“Over the last month Australian golf has showcased our best courses, the world’s best players and made big inroads to securing additional corporate support. Next week’s JBWere Masters will culminate an incredible year and we are very optimistic that we can keep this momentum going into 2012.”

Thorburn added that securing more big name players to feature in the events will be a key part of their strategy.

“We have already had great interest from a number of high profile players for 2012,” he said in a statement.

“While we can’t compete for prize money with the likes of the PGA Tour and the European Tour, we certainly have a reputation for world class golf courses and our tourna
